Jack Black is adding another video game adaptation to his resume. On Tuesday, January 2, Deadline reported that the actor will star in Minecraft, a film based on Mojang Studios’ popular block-building adventure game and distributed by Microsoft.
Minecraft, a popular video game with over 140 million monthly users that debuted in 2011, is a sandbox-style game that allows players to create 3D worlds using colorful blocks.
It was first released in 2009, has sold over 300 million copies, and has nearly 140 million monthly active players.
Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Legends are all spinoffs. The game’s Swedish developer, Mojang Studios, was acquired by Microsoft in 2014 and will serve as a producer on the film adaptation.
The upcoming Minecraft film adaptation, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, promises pixelated fun on the big screen.
It was previously announced that Jason Momoa would star in the film alongside Wednesday’s Emma Myers and The Color Purple’s Danielle Brooks. Production is expected to begin in New Zealand.
Production is about to get underway on Warner Bros/Vertigo/Legendary’s feature take on Mojang/Microsoft’s Minecraft, and sources tell us that Jack Black is joining the cast of the Jason Momoa-led movie.
The plot of the film is unknown, and the writing credits have yet to be determined.
